The Shifting of the Seasons
I marvel at the shifting of the seasons. Where I live, we have an amazing view of the winter solstice as the sun sinks into the midnight skies. As I watch the movement of the sun dance across the ocean towards that later spot, I feel the shifts in the temperature as the days darken and nights creep further into the minds and hearts of nature.
So much of my life I was attracted to the caves and dark places which were quiet and felt sheltered. I created most of my bedrooms being in the basements, which offered the stillness that most human life constantly shatters with the chaos and conflicts that plague the minds of man.
Sheltered in the earth, the sirens of human existence diminish, and sleep becomes easy to embrace.
I have put up those shades that keep the light out because I am so light sensitive that the moment the morning lights rise, they call me to also rise with them.
I think it is just the natural flow of my Leo self.
As the sun rises … I too am called to rise with it.
And as the sun sets, so too must I lay my head on the pillow and drift off into the darkness.
As the seasons shift, I feel like a bear seeking the perfect place to hibernate and to not be disturbed by the self-created troubles that mankind loves to stir up.
I love the sweetness of this time of the year. The blackberry bushes are bursting with endless promises of delicious flavors and the natural wine of fermenting fruits.
The winds increase and the coolness begins to leak into the house, calling for us to build a fire in the wood burning stove, and to keep the hot tub warm and welcoming.
The tomatoes have stormed the garden with the peppers coming in a close second in the race towards fall. That indicates that it is time to make the fresh salsa and prepare the spaghetti sauces that we will enjoy over the winter.
The Delicata Squash have taken in the golden light of the sun and now store them in their luscious fruit as they cascade down to the ground, a large leafy green curtain, from the massive pots from which they have grown.
Soon the last energy from those vines will wither and loose their deep green color, allowing the fruits to take the last sweetness from the soil and the last warmth of the sun to make memorable meals during the cold winter months.
They will be our reminder of the beautiful summer so we can reflect on what has past by this year, with a smile.
