I look at these cards this month and notice that there continues to be this split in perception. For some, they believe they are getting their dream. Others feel as if they are losing their dream.

This creates an atmosphere where some are so concerned that they are frozen in fear, like the rabbit. Others pull inward and detach from external reality in favor of the journey of discovery inward.

What is clear is that the old strong tree that once was so statuesque and brilliant … standing tall in the sun, has now fallen over, and in the season of the rains cascading down, that old tree is being covered in moss. This is reflected in the card, Cimi, in the Mayan tradition. Cimi reminds us that it is in surrender that we will find the door. It asks us to offer up our longing for perfection to this deity in favor of experiencing forgiveness, humility, and, ultimately, revelation.

This card will be the theme for January and the entire year (especially if we look at astrology). In the Mayan tradition, surrender is not about giving up. It is about freeing yourself from the “desire” to be in control. We are asked to let go of how we think things should be and instead recognize the bondage of where we are. The idealized version of our reality is like a broken building with a lovely façade. But that façade hides a terrible rot that has eaten the core inside the building away, so now that building is unstable and is destined to fall.

It is time to walk in the dark forest alone and, through that vision quest, discover what you have been afraid to look at. What we have been scared to see is the tremendous dysfunction of humanity and the terrible pain and suffering that continues to be inflicted upon so many innocent souls. That is what must change. But it will get worse before it gets better.

Yet, the cards also reveal the sweetness still alive in those who hold the energy of the porcupine and the hummingbird. When we remember to love fully and totally, we give life back to the parts of ourselves that need it the most. In loving, we remember who we are and why we are here. In caring, we let the past go and appreciate this moment.

Imix reminds us that we are not here to trust the world or those in power. We are here to trust ourselves and know that we can find nourishment in the deep places within, knowing how to feed our souls and bring hope back out into the world. This month, we must learn not to overdo or over-nurture others. We are asked not to take responsibility for others but to recognize that when we communicate what is true from our soul, we give a great thing out into the world.

Ix is the magic formed in the emptiness of our longing. Ix brings us a vision that will show us how to stay connected to our hearts and know that this is the energy that will become our muse and guide us along the journey ahead of us. To this archetype, the only path is the path that will direct us to share and experience more beauty and how that beauty becomes the power that we need to bloom finally. It is also a warning that you will be tested on detecting integrity in yourself and others. It will help you see those that need external approval, recognition, and status. Ix reminds us that transparency is the greatest power to have at this time. The only way to have that is to be willing to see all aspects of your life as a window that needs to be created to let more of your light shine out into the world.

This month, we will need the wisdom of the white owl who allows us to see the whole truth. We will need the raven’s power to remind us that we are magic and live in a world of magic. We are to look within to find what we seek. We are to call on the Parrot to remind us that there is great power in cultivating delight through art, music, and dance. We are to allow in the overview and perspective of the eagle so that we can have clear sight and become a beacon of hope for others.

January is a month that we begin a sacred journey. Psychically, we are being asked to step up and into the pure place of spirit and to let go of the darkness and dysfunction of the human condition.

This is a month to dance wildly and let out all this energy that has been pent up inside. We have to shake it loose and off our being to find a new center of clarity. What is clear is that our old self is either dead or dying. Release it and allow it to become a phoenix so you can rise from the ashes of your old self.
