Poem – Chopping Down the Cherry Tree

It is time for picnics and cherry pie.
But we have a country that now leans into a lie.
What can we do when we know the obvious truth?
And we are exhausted from needing to be a sleuth.

I love our country but do not want us to be torn down.
By some irrational and deceptive old clown.
Is it enough to hold firm to what we know?
When so many others want to be a part of his show?

All I know is that we must hold firmly on to what is good.
Even when others tell us that the king with no clothes is being misunderstood.
What I know is that we are being undermined.
By those in power who believe they should be enshrined.

I thank the stars that I am this old.
I have nothing to lose if I decide to be so bold.
I have lived in a time that was a wonder to see.
But Washington’s evil twin is chopping down our cherry tree.

I have a place that is safe to call my home.
I can grow my own food and continue to freely roam.
But I worry for those who come behind in my wake.
Because if they have their way the middle class will not get a break.
