Poem – The Black Waters of Suriname
Black waters of Suriname,
So dark, deep, and still,
Such secrets hidden in your depths,
A mystery and a bit of thrill.
Your color is the result of decay,
Of foliage and nature’s waste,
Yet, you are sacred and healing,
You are something that cannot be erased.
Pythons hunt their prey in you,
Hidden from sight and mind,
You hold a mystery and magic,
That no one can truly find.
The people who live by your banks,
Are exotic and unique,
Their mixed blood creates beauty,
That is truly rare and chic.
North Africans, Indians, Javanese,
And Dutch, all in one place,
Long black hair, caramel skin,
Sometimes blue eyes grace their face.
Lurking in the black waters of Suriname,
Is something so ancient and so dear,
A mystery, a beauty, and a magic,
That seekers can never get near.
