Suzanne Wagner Poem – The Bones of Ancient Paths Still Speak

The Bones of Ancient Paths Still Speak

I listened to my mind, and it led me astray.

I listened to my heart, and it knew the way.
Too many follow the rutted road of old.
They are covered with bones of the bold.

They were bold because they were manipulated by those.
That wanted to believe that they wore emperors’ clothes.
But they were deceivers and only wanted to spread hate.
They cast the first stone and hid behind golden gates.

They were lost inside, and their hearts were dark.
So they wanted to take others on their destructive lark.
And now those brave souls whose bones line the path.
Of another’s hatred, rage and wrath.

Are the paving stones upon which some still walk.
But I wonder what they would say if those bones could talk.
I am sure they would warn about following blindly along.
And believing in those that do not know right from wrong.

I listen to the bones as I walk on this earth.
I hear their heartbreak and know their worth.
Until mankind can finally listen to the bones.
They will continue to cast too many stones.
