Today is a number 5 day and it asks us to recognize our ancestors that were so strong that their journey has allowed us to be here now. Without their tenacity and strength to keep going, we might not be here. This is the number of the ancestors and the grandmothers and grandfathers that lived much harder lives than us so that we could have the degree of comfort that we have now.
It is days like today that it is appropriate to remember those that have come before us and give them the respect and honor they deserve.
This is a great way to celebrate this day.
Perhaps pull out some old pictures and place them in a conspicuous place with some flowers to celebrate their accomplishments. I find this is a good way to connect to them.
I have two sides of my family that are Irish Catholics that left Ireland during the Irish Potato Famine in order to survive. One left at 13 years old and got on the boat by herself to come to America. From there she made her way to Minnesota, where she married and had children. Only to lose her husband in a coupling accident (as he worked on the trains) and then she lived in a box car on the trains with her 4 children making food for the trainmen, saving her money and eventually becoming an Oklahoma Sooner to claim her land where she knew there would be a train station and city. That is where she built a small hotel with her children for the trainmen and that was how she learned to survive.
I think of her often. I honor the strength and fortitude it must have taken to keep going after her husband died. Then with 4 children, she got in a covered wagon to go find her life in the Oklahoma Territories.
I often hear her strong voice in my head if ever I feel like collapsing. She lets me have it and says that she did not go through all she did to have her great grandchild collapse over something so simple.
Today, I honor her and all those that have given me the strength and courage to keep going during times of difficulty. Because of them, I am who I am. I have a sense of humor in difficult times. And I have a knack for spinning a yarn. It must be the Irish in me!
