Poem – Observing the Process of Dementia

Poem – Observing the Process of Dementia

As I observe the process with my mother unfold,

I reminisce on memories both new and old.

I empathize with her as her mind slips away,

And hear her struggle for words day by day.

Aging is a challenging road to travel,

Watching a mind deteriorate can be a battle.

Though I cannot halt this inevitable end,

I can offer comfort and be a steadfast friend.

I remind myself that each of us chose our birth,

And every soul is of immense worth.

For ultimately, we all rely on each other,

As sisters, brothers, and mothers.

May her ancestors envelop her with care.
May they give her peace even if she is unaware.

May they embrace her in their loving hold,

So that she departs in peace, not cold.

May they guide her to a promised land,

Lifting her up … may they take her hand.

As I observe her slowly fading away,

Her love and memory within me will forever stay.
