Poem – The Good Red Road
The Good Red Road is one that bare feet walk.
It gives us the insight and overview of a hawk.
It asks much of us and will tear egos down.
At the end of the road … it offers no prize or crown.
It humbles the soul and reminds us to breathe.
It shows us what we hold and where we still seethe.
It requires us to go very slow.
Because the rock and thorns are just below.
We cannot grow and gain wisdom and respect.
If we run down the path and do not really connect.
We are here to meet others on the road.
We will be asked in moments to carry another’s load.
And moments will come that we are too exhausted to take another step.
That is when others will arrive to help us schlep.
What we thought we needed to survive.
But now, carrying that past will not allow us to arrive.
So those wiser than us will show us how to let things go.
And then we will understand that all that we know.
Was not what this journey was ever about.
And finally … we will be able to let it all out.
Then the Good Red Road will become less of a trial.
And all the suffering will turn into smiles.
The dirt from the road will cover our face.
And the tears of surrender will etch our soul with grace.
